Furniture manufacturers are looking for ways to make their products adaptable to fit in to the lifestyles of their customers.
Canadian designer Danielle Lareau, principal of the Vancouver-based Giraffe Design Corp, told the Vancouver Sun that given the size of many homes, people need to have furniture which they can use in several ways.
Some of the ideas which Ms Lareau, who has won the Georgie Award from the Canadian Home Building Association, has come up with include a sofa which is deep enough to also be used as a bed.
She explained that many people do not want a room to just be dominated by a dining table or other furniture.
"It's also about not letting furniture take over a space which could be better used for something which you do more often," Ms Lareau added.
Kitchens may also be home now to items like dining tables, with a spokesperson for Fairmont and Main recently noting how the room has become one of the focal points of the home.
