Oak coffee table could create a 1960s look

Furniture can help channel the 1960s style with colourful cushions and paisley prints, it has been suggested.

Helen Green, author of the interior design blog on terrysfabrics.co.uk, said pattern and colour need to be emphasised on everything, from the walls, to floors and furniture.

As well as clashing shades and flowers, the placement of furniture can also play a key role in securing the style of this decade.

"The hippie lifestyle was so laid back that furniture was often low to the ground or a seating arrangement of cushions would be placed casually around a coffee table," she noted.

Oak coffee tables could become a focal point of a room if bright and comfy cushions are scattered around the outside.

Once homeowners get bored of this look, an oak coffee table could be moved to a different part of the room for more conventional designs.

Ms Green previously noted people who want to create a rock and roll 1950s interior should remember furniture in this period was often curved, adding "kidney shapes were common for coffee tables".
