Oak furniture ‘on show for visitors to Cothay Manor’

Published on: May 27, 2010 | George Copper

Oak furniture and other pieces made out of the wood are now on show for visitors to Cothay Manor.

The 15th-century house in Somerset has opened its doors to members of the public, who can take in decor such as oak furniture, the Daily Telegraph explained.

Owners Alastair and Mary Anne Robb have lived there since 1993 and preserved pieces of oak furniture, as well as Chinese ceramics and antique textiles.

They added "some earlier oak pieces" to the Great Chamber, while the timber was also used for panelling, but was painted to resemble walnut, the newspaper said.

"Like the majority of ancient houses, Cothay is an amalgam. Mostly built in a three-year period beginning in 1485, it incorporates elements of an earlier, 13th-century house created for Adam de Cothay," it stated.

As well as oak furniture and other antique pieces, the manor has 12 acres of gardens that are split into different ‘rooms’, such as the Bishop’s Room, the Cherry Garden and the Walk of the Unicorn.

This medieval manor is well worth a visit. I can only imagine how stunning traditional oak furniture looks coupled with the exposed wooden ceiling beams and brickwork.
